Even while they're busy exchanging sweet and affectionate gestures like this, Shinji's unprepared for how a statement like that one would make his heart flutter. His hands still in surprise for just a moment, before he moves them down to either side of Kai's head and carefully runs his thumbs over his temples.
That daring peek is definitely rewarded with a look at some choice color hitting Shinji's cheeks, though his expression quickly shifts from surprise to something a little more... somber. "I'm glad... I can be putting them to good use." How nice that they can be doing things that make the people he cares about happy, and holding on to these important things.
Kai's expression stayed soft, his own thumbs tracing tender lines over Shinji's collar. Shinji had been putting in a lot of effort to make those hands into something new. They weren't going unnoticed.
"They're doing a good job," he assured him. "Really. Can't wait to see what they do next."
Figuratively speaking. ... Also probably literally, considering the situation at hand.
How convenient it is that Shinji's hands are currently fit to hold Kai in place, as he leans in to plant a small, quick kiss on the others lips. Turns out what they'll do next is that - probably not entirely surprising, but hopefully as welcome as those pets had been.
"For now, they're going to help you get cleaned up." But after that, who knows! The sky is truly the limit, as long as what he does lets him see that soft expression more. "And then... we'll see what happens after that."
As it turned out, kisses were also highly coveted. The only tragedy was that it was so quick. Kai was left watching him with lips parted softly in surprise, but the delight was still dancing in his eyes.
Maybe it wasn't just delight though. The rush of the shower was probably enough to mask the hitch of his breath at those very open ended words. He nodded, paused, and nodded again as he made himself give Shinji's shoulders some spirited pats. "Yup!" Getting clean! Was the task at hand! Sure was!
Goodness, goodness...! Pretty much immediately after the words were out of his mouth, another flash of color hits Shinji's cheeks. Perhaps he didn't mean for it to be such an open-ended statement, free to let minds wander where they please, but... he's not really going to take it back, either. Wander away, both of you.
But not, like, out of the shower. Not just yet. Clean is the actual important goal here, and he'd like to at least keep that in mind for as long as possible. "Pretty good...?" As much as he can tell through all of that soap, anyway. "Let's rinse you off and get a better look."
Clearly only the cleanest thoughts for clean boys now. They both just had very helpful hands. Useful for all kinds of tasks! Like rinsing.
"Good plan." Kai flashed Shinji a sudden grin, pressing forward suddenly to lightly bump him chest-to-chest. Time to scoot under the bulk of the stream with as many little shuffles as it took to get them both fully under the water. They had to check on your hair too, Shinji! Scoot scoot.
Oh! Scoots time! Shinji's a little surprised at the sudden bumps, but takes enough of a step back to get that water flowing over the both of them, briefly squeezing his eyes shut as he does. Not gonna have any soap getting in his eyes today, nor chocolate, after all of this.
He slips one hand down to Kai's shoulder to keep himself steady while he gives the water enough time to rinse off anything particularly dangerous. Give him a moment to wipe his face off really quickly, and, "Does it seem okay...?" Might be a little tougher to tell at a glance than Kai's hair, but, as long as the effort was made... that should be fine.
Or hot sauce. Or anything else that would be terrible to get in one's eyes. These peepers were safe. Thank you, cleansing waters.
Kai gave his head a little shake as if that would do anything to help de-soap his already rinsed hair. They were still under the stream though, so this did approximately nothing for anyone. There wasn't even a chance for his hair to go wild, getting immediately smoothed back out. Still, Kai grinned as if he had accomplished something and lifted his hands up to push them through Shinji's hair. "Let's see."
Time to see what the swept back look would look like on him as Kai diligently combed his fingers back. "Hmmhmmm... s'feelin' pretty good to me."
Probably not as ~rebellious~ of a look as Kai's slicked back hair, but definitely different. He hums softly at that hand running through his hair, equally pleased at the report of a clean head of hair.
"Good." That means they can move on, even if the hands-in-hair aspect of this has been very nice. "Let me get your back really fast, then."
Kai leaned in to pepper a kiss on that cute bare forehead, making his departure from Shinji's hair easier to go along with. It was all so nice, Kai was almost loathe to encourage Shinji do anything else. As much as he loved a good pet though, the allure of a back rub was enticing enough.
"Sounds good." He already knew it wasn't that bad, Shinji had already said as much. Was that going to keep him from turning around? Of course not. There you go, buddy, it was all yours.
He'll make sure to make short work out of whatever mess there is back here - and there certainly wasn't nearly as much to contend with as there had been with their hair. Even if it isn't as exciting as being face-to-face and everything that entailed, but maybe those soapy hands working at his shoulders and back will be worth it.
And, maybe, Shinji won't be as quick as possible about it, now that he's got his hands working at Kai's back. Maybe he can take just a little extra time to rub the muscles in the other's shoulders a bit, wanting to ease away any tension they might be holding. And would it really be so bad if he lingered for a few more moments after that, trailing his hands down Kai's back and around to his waist, even if it doesn't result in any meaningful scrubbing?
For Shinji's part, it's worth sacrificing a little bit of potential smooching time to just kind of... admire the other boy. How nice, truly.
Who could say this wasn't exciting in its own way? It wasn't like Kai was used to being admired in any way. The hands at his back weren't new, but the way they lingered was. They didn't have anywhere to be. Kai could just melt into this for a little while, ignoring the heat crawling across his cheeks.
He exhaled softly as those careful hands worked across him. Probably this kind of simple thing shouldn't have made his heart race so fast? And yet. There it went, picking up the slack as his breath stilled with those touches at his waist.
Kai's hands drifted down, carefully settling over Shinji's. "S'nice."
"It is," he answers, leaning in to gently rest his forehead against the back of Kai's shoulder. Warm skin under warm hands, surrounded by warm air and warm water. So cozy, so intimate...
He rests there for another moment, and once he's sure that the water's managed to rinse away enough of the soap he'd left there, Shinji presses a kiss into that shoulder. "That should be good." Nice and clean. He will, however, not initiate pulling away. Not just yet.
Staying just like that for a bit was just fine. Encouraged, really, because Kai wasn't actually sure what came next. It felt like this was a "and then" sort of situation. There were things, but settling for this tasteful nude hug was perhaps. Best. For now?? For now. Yes.
Kai trailed his fingertips over Shinji's wrists, turning his head a bit to try and look at the other boy. "Maybe it's your turn."
No arguments about simply basking in this position for a little while longer, while they both try and figure out what kind of expectations might be at play here, or where they might end up taking this. Just a moment to breathe, to simply enjoy what's happening.
"Maybe." Perhaps he's still a bit loathe to let go, but it's probably in the best interests of 'and then' if he does, huh? His fingers curl slightly as Kai's fingers trace over his wrists, but after that his hold eases up. Let him press one more affectionate smooch onto that shoulder before he pulls his hands back. "That sounds nice."
This was very nice though. He wouldn't have protested an argument to stay like this a bit longer. The 'and then' of pampering Shinji similarly was compelling enough to see this switcheroo through. So he smiled at that last kiss, making a pleased hum.
"Let's go then."
Kai reached out to grab a bit of soap for his own palms, stepping around to face Shinji. Or that was the plan, until his heel wasn't quite where it was supposed to be, and his turn went a bit more than he expected.
It's pretty unfortunate that Shinji had already turned his back to Kai when that grab for the soap went terribly, terribly wrong. Would Shinji even have been able to prevent this tragic fate? This awful slip-up?
He figures out that something is Amiss pretty quickly, but it's not split-second enough for him to even attempt to catch Kai as he takes that fall. He only manages to catch the sight of the collision, his whole body tensing up in shock.
Shinji is not so easily convinced, but having Kai respond is, at the very least, a positive sign. Conscious and alert is more ideal than the alternative, but Kai's judgement on 'fine' might not be in agreement with Shinji's standards.
"Are you sure?" You can stay down there on the floor, Kai, but Shinji's about to join you as quickly and safely as he can for an up-close inspection of any potential damage. "You aren't bleeding anywhere, are you...?"
No, no, all that blood was just trapped in his face. Probably. It was admittedly hard to immediately tell with all that warm water still falling around them. Kai huffed, not meeting Shinji's worried look as he rubbed back of his wet head. "I don't think so..." And lo, that hand was clean when he brought it back.
Thank goodness for that clean hand, but a bruised ego isn't exactly ideal, either. And, still, even if that spill didn't result in any bloodshed, that doesn't mean Kai couldn't still be hurt.
That worried look stays very firmly in place whether it's being acknowledged or not, and Shinji very, very carefully places his hand at the side of Kai's head. Even if Kai ends up with just some bruising, such a hot and steamy environment is probably not the most comfortable place to be, huh?
"Let's... finish getting you cleaned up quickly and out of here, okay?"
Kai grumbled even as he moved his hand to ghost across the back of Shinji's. "Yeah. I guess." This was truly the voice of one dejected doggo, ready to sulk.
He finally glanced up at him, sighing. "Pretty sure I'm okay though. Promise." Here, he'll even move to get up! And only wince a little bit.
Careful, now, no reason to risk a repeat. Shinji offers Kai a hand up as he gets back to his feet, as if he'll be able to keep him steady in the event of another slick spot appearing underfoot.
"That's no good," not as dire as an open wound, but still! "We can take it easy after this, all right?"
A little bit of rest, ignoring any implications their prior actions had been pointing to, is probably a wise idea.
Carefully gripping his hand, Kai made sure most of his weight was going towards the wall lest he end up pulling Shinji down with him. This had already been very stupid. No need to make it worse.
Frustrating as it was, he still didn't feel like arguing against the other boy's worries either. He just sighed, giving Shinji's hand a soft squeeze.
Today is just determined to be incredibly stupid in any way it can.
But, make it up to him...? Because of those unspoken implications? And the entirely ruined mood? Another bit of color rises to Shinji's cheeks, but that promise is what gets his frown to soften up just a tiny bit. He loosens up his hold on Kai's hand, so he can instead move both hands up to cup the other's cheeks. Time for that face to become a sandwich.
"I'm not worried about that." It's not like either of them owes the other anything, especially when everything had been unspoken in the first place. More than that, he wouldn't expect Kai to leave him high and dry on purpose in any situation, let alone something like this.
